"During Lady Carnarvon’s  widowhood we spent many summer holidays of  the 1950s and 1960s at  Monte Carlo.

 There was  always one afternoon set aside when only my mother knew about Almina’s plans.   JTS was sent off to play golf.

Almina looked as though she was going to a funeral, all dressed in black, with a dark veil covering her face.

 A taxi  collected her from the  villa,  I escorted the Countess outside and handed her a bunch of seasonal flowers.

My mother told  me years later that on these mystery trips Almina went to  pay  her respects to Prince Duleep Singh at his grave high up in Monte Carlo’s Cemetery.”
